Rockabilly/swing guitarist Brian Setzer voted the world’s greatest living guitarist.

Brian Seltzer has topped an online poll of the world’s greatest living guitarists.  The former ‘Stray Cats’ member beet 97 other guitarists into first place in the poll carried out by guitar website dbTwang.com.

Three time Grammy award winner, Brian Setzer first came to prominence as the guitarist with 80's Rockabillies The Stray Cats who split in 1984 after a string of UK and US hits. Brian then went on to record several solo projects.  In 1987, he played the part of Eddie Cochran in the Ritchie Valens biopic, La Bamba.  The 50 year old from New York State also played lead guitar as part of Robert Plant's 80's ensemble band. Since then, Brian, a 7 time Grammy nominee, has split his time between further solo projects and ‘The Brian Setzer Orchestra’; a 17 piece swing and jump blues band.

Announcing Setzer as the winner of dbTwang.com’s inaugural monthly poll, co-founder Fintan Blake Kelly said “Setzer’s rise to the top was fascinating to watch.  Almost 1,200 votes were cast in total over the 3 weeks of this poll, distributed amongst 97 living guitarists from the well-known likes of Clapton to Jimmy Page to the less well known yet still critically acclaimed such as Tommy Emanuel and Joe Bonamassa.  Each voter was restricted to naming their top 3 guitarists.

“The poll is really the end result of several, sometimes heated debates at dbtwang.com”, added Fintan.  “By being asked to choose just 3 guitarists out of a list of such exemplary musicians, voters were compelled to really consider which of these great guitarists have lengthened the vanishing point of possibilities for the guitar, either through innovative technique or sound.  This leaves us with a definitive list - as I believe that within that subjective context, voting in a poll is not totally dissimilar to purchasing a download and having it logged in a Billboard chart.”

“There were also some unexpected inclusions and omissions from the shortlist, said Fintan, “and we were certainly surprised at how the vote panned out, but then,  that’s the beauty of having a community led poll of people who are really passionate about guitars.  This poll is a great start to our ‘monthly poll initiative’ - next we’ll be asking for the the People’s Favorite Metal Guitarists”.
