At nine months old, she contracted spinal meningitis and from the various medications, she became paralyzed. Shaimaa has been a quadriplegic ever since. Through Lutheran Family Refugee Services, Home Health Exchange was called in to take care of Shaimaa 24 hours a day. Shaimaa came to this country with her sister, Sahara and her ten year old daughter, Mouj. When they arrived in the United States, none of them spoke English. Mouj is in public school, with hearing loss in both ears from the constant bombing in their country when she was younger. Sahara is now working as a cleaning lady in a Phoenix hotel.
