The New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) International Section recently held its Fall conference in Singapore titled "New York and New Asia: A Partnership for the 21st Century".
Alvaro Aguilar, a partner at Lombardi Aguilar Group, participated as speaker in the panel discussing "Trusts in Asia and Beyond". In his presentation, Aguilar explained how the Roman Law fidei comisso evolved into a civil law trust which has most of the features of the common law trust and mentioned case law from Panama courts upholding the asset protection and confidentiality provisions of its trust law. Along with speakers of the host country Singapore, Australia, Argentina, and the U.S., the panel examined solutions which trust laws in their countries could offer a group of investors.
The meeting was held at the Swissotel Hotel in Singapore and was attended by members of this recognized association, as well as attorneys of law firms in this city and throughout Asia.
