Oct. 5, 2009 - PRLog -- ZTE Corporation (ZTE), a major global provider of telecommunications technology and network solutions, and Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), a Hong Kong government founded research institute, today announced that the two companies will jointly demonstrate LTE TDD (Long Term Evolution Time Division Duplex) wireless HD video IOT (Interoperability Test) calls during the ITU Telecom World 2009 to be held in Geneva from 5-9 Oct. This is also the first cross-vendor LTE TDD IOT successfully completed in the industry.

The demonstration is made to public in ZTE’s exhibition booth (no.4011, hall 4) utilising ZTE’s LTE TDD complete infrastructure system and the LTE TDD mobile device prototype designed by ASTRI and its industry partner, Innofidei. HD video test calls are transmitted over a 20 MHz wireless channel at 2.3 GHz radio frequency with advanced MIMO technologies. ZTE and ASTRI have collaborated to validate LTE TDD technologies and to ensure that their respective LTE TDD designs meet all the requirements of the latest LTE standard. The two companies have recently become the first in the industry as confirmed by LSTI (Long Term Evolution/System Architecture Evolution Trial Initiative) to have jointly submitted LTE TDD IODT report to LSTI. The LTE TDD test call demonstration was made debut in the P&T/Wireless & Networks Comm China in Bejing last month and received great attention from the industry.

“The success in demonstration has highlighted ZTE’s leadership in providing LTE TDD infrastructure system. ZTE’s LTE TDD base station is the first SDR (Software Defined Radio) eNodeB in the field that supports both the smooth evolution from TD-SCDMA to LTE TDD and the LTE TDD/FDD platform convergence,” said Dr Zhao Xianming, vice president of ZTE Corporation, “The IOT with ASTRI has achieved gratifying progress, we are looking forward to strengthening our collaborations in the future.”

“We are delighted that ASTRI has been chosen by ZTE as a test partner and succeeded in Interoperability Testing. I am sure the new LTE TDD call over air link will draw attention from the industry when it is demonstrated in the telecom show in Geneva as much as it had in Beijing,” said Dr Cheung Nim-kwan, CEO of ASTRI.  “LTE is expected to be a global standard in both FDD and TDD domains. ASTRI has been working closely with industry leaders on LTE TDD core functionality. We have also embarked on developing LTE FDD with an objective to accelerate the growth of the burgeoning LTE market,” added Dr Cheung.

ZTE and ASTRI have plans to continue their partnership in conducting more interoperability tests which include taking part in the LTE TDD IOT activities organized by the largest service provider in the world, China Mobile.

About ASTRI

The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) was founded by the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2000 to enhance technological advances for Hong Kong through applied research.

In 2006, ASTRI was designated the Hong Kong Research and Development Centre for Information and Communications Technologies by the Innovation and Technology Commission to perform leading-edge R&D for technology transfer to industry, develop technological human resources and act as a focal point bringing together industry and university R&D assets.

During the past years, ASTRI has been conducting a spectrum of world-class and customer-focused R&D, and has built teams of excellent researchers, produced a volume of intellectual properties and created real economic impact by transferring technologies to its clients in Hong Kong, the Mainland and the region.
