Sept. 23, 2009 - PRLog -- Overview
"Cinematography's the way one responds to light." - Ernest Dickerson
A cinematographer is responsible for composing each frame in a scene to be shot and deciding the lighting and camera angles according to the requirements of the director. As a cinematographer, you will lead the camera/lighting team and will be involved in the planning and execution of a shoot from the pre-production stage.
Lighting is used to change the mood of a scene or to indicate practical aspects such as day or night. The lighting technician arranges all the lighting effects designed by the cinematographer according to the instructions of the chief assistant cameraman.
This course blends traditional filmmaking techniques with the latest digital video and film cinematography. We use the Panasonic SDX-900, the Sony DSR-500 DVCam, and the DXC-30WS cameras for regular projects and Arri435 and Arri3 for special projects.
There are screenings, lectures, and demonstrations to help you understand creative possibilities as you develop an eye for aesthetics.
Cinematic possibilities of advanced digital video and film cinematography will be explored. Students will experiment with the creative use of feature film lighting techniques and equipment. They will learn how to use the built-in menus of a camera to control hue, density, and contrast while using lighting equipment and light meters to control image quality.
Students will use filters to create dramatic scenes in the studio and on location. Afternoons and evenings will be spent on location and in the studio under demanding professional conditions, testing theory, and gaining practical experience in various lighting situations such as day-for-night, night-for-night, available and mixed light, magic-hour, fire and candle light, and close-up table tops.
Each morning students will share their discoveries, successes, and failures as the class reviews and critiques the previous day's shooting.
There will be four to five long duration workshops by well-known industry practitioners coming from Bombay. During the workshops, screening of their work will take place to analyze their unique style. Various lighting situations will be taken up by the instructor to demonstrate different ways to light them up. Possible outdoor and indoor locations in Delhi will be explored for a wider perspective on problems associated with location shooting. Students will be given typical situations for light up and will be guided by workshop instructor.
Shooting studios will be hired to explore all the possibilities. Variety of lighting styles, like source lighting, mood lighting, stylization, glamour will be demonstrated through practical situations in the studio. These workshops will give the students confidence and technical fineness required to shoot any professional cinematography assignment in the film and television industry.
After completing the course, the students can easily seek employment with television and production companies. Ambitious students begin their career as assistant cameramen, graduating to independent cinematographers in a few years where they can command anywhere between Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 35,000 per day, depending upon their experience and quality of work.
