Industry University Linkages of BITS Pilani

July 20, 2009 - PRLog -- BITS Pilani established a campus at Dubai (UAE) in 2000, a campus at Goa in 2004 and a campus at Hyderabad in 2008. For admissions to various campus programs, BITS Pilani introduced the Online test BITSAT in year 2005 which allows the student to choose the date, time and venue for the examination.

BITS Pilani since 1973 has made a pioneering contribution for the development of institutionalized linkages between university and industry. The early start evidently helped, for the Institute today, has tie-ups with a large number of companies across the country.

The Practice School Program of BITS takes all its students to the industry for seven and half months as an integral component of the academic curriculum like the medical internship.

In terms of Practice School - I Programme, which is presently implemented for two months at the end of second year for all its campus programmes, the number of industries has grown from 14 stations and 244 students in 1975 to 136 stations and 1404 students in 2008. Practice School I gives the first industrial exposure to the student to understand and appreciate the complexities of the real world operations.

In terms of Practice School - II programme which is implemented for five and half months in the final year for all its campus programme students, the number of industries has grown from 1 station and 24 students in 1973 to 139 stations & 1625 students in 2008. Practice School II puts the student to work on real life on going projects under professional experts in various organizations.

The entire Practice School operation is monitored by a Faculty member of BITS placed at the organization for carrying out the planning, implementation, coordination and evaluation aspects of the programme. The evaluation in Practice School is typically done through quizzes, group discussions, seminars, vivas, project reports apart from Technical Diary and Observation components.

In addition to companies from India, organizations from USA, Europe, Middle East and Singapore are participating in the Practice School program.

The off-campus work-integrated learning programmes of BITS aim to addresses the Human Resource Development needs of the industry. In terms of off-campus degree programmes, the enrollment has grown from 30 students in 1979 to over 19,000 students in 2008.

For the work Integrated Learning Programmes, in the IT area BITS has tie up with Wipro, CTS, HP, Persistent, Patni, TechMahindra, SAP, Yahoo!, Sabre Travel etc. In the Engineering area BITS has tie up with Bharat Forge, Ashok Leyland, L&T etc. In the Power sector BITS has tieup with NTPC, NDPL (Tata Power), Essar Power, Renusagar Power, Tehri Hydro etc. In the Process area BITS had tieup with Chambal Fertilizers, Tata Chemicals, Hindustan Zinc etc. In the Pharma sector BITS has tieup with Dr Reddy’s Labs, Matrix Labs, Strides Arco Labs and Dabur Pharma.
