By: Graciela Valverde The Arenal Volcano National Park is part of the Arenal Huetar Norte Conservation Area (ACA-HN), officially created on September 26, 1994 by an executive decree published in the official Gazette of Costa Rica on November 22nd of the same year. This park had previously been a protected area but under different management categories. The Arenal Volcano National Park extends to part of the province of Guanacaste and Alajuela, including the districts of San Carlos and San Ramon, covering an area of 1,210.6 hectares. Historic Background The Arenal Volcano has had different names throughout the years: Arenal Hill, Sugar Bread, Basket Volcano, Costa Rica Volcano, Río Frío Volcano, Guatuso Hill. It is an impressive and beautiful strata-volcano with a conical shape, located about seven kilometers northeast of La Fortuna. The name “Arenal” refers to the fact that lava decomposes into lithic sands, which are then deposited at the foot of the volcano in the fertile valley of the channels. (“Arena” is the Spanish word for “sand”.) Before 1986, the Arenal cone was covered with dense vegetation and had only one crater with fumarolic activity. However, on July 29, 1968 at 7:20 am (local time), a pelagic explosion took place. This eruption formed Crater A or Nelson Crater at approximately 1060 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.). It spewed burning clouds of hot, sulfurous gas containing rocks that hit two towns at the foot of the volcano, causing the death of 87 people. Between July 29-31 of the same year, three new craters were formed: Crater B the smallest at 1170 m.a.s.l, Crater C at 1460 m.a.s.l with a intermediate size compared to other two, and fourth and last, Crater D at the top of the Arenal Volcano. At present, only Craters C and D remain.
