The uses of LiDAR technology

Lidar data provides a lot of engineering possibilities, much of which can be done without actually leaving the office or going on grounds.

New lines can be engineered with tower or pole placement and  utilities have fully engineered transmission lines ready for construction. Tower placement can be done using the Lidar data inside the office and programming a GPS unit so that construction crews know exactly where to locate each tower.
Aerial LiDAR is accepted as the most efficient and cost-effective means to create accurate digital elevation and terrain data. It has become the standard for flood mapping and many other applications requiring fast, accurate, inexpensive Digital Terrain Models (DTMs), Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) and other geospatial features. But exactly how those final deliverables such as DTMs, DEMs and topographic features are derived, is still a mystery to many LiDAR customers and data users.
Another use of LIDAR is that it helps in surveys for Pipelines and Exploration. Petroleum and utility companies need precise knowledge of the topography when planning the construction of pipelines, utility routes or the mapping of broad area exploration sites.  Terrestrial laser scanning  benefits mining.  Laser scanner provides several advantages over conventional surveying methods for mining and transportation applications. Limited time on a site drastically increases safety for all concerned plus, the vast volumes of data obtained offer far greater accuracy than other methods and jobs that  can be completed in days rather than weeks.

LIDAR is  used for creating three dimensional topographical maps and surveys of geographical regions. LIDAR has been used in this way to create maps of Mars, to track glaciers and to visualize the Grand canyon .

LIDAR helps analyze the ocean floor and to determine canopy heights and biomass measurements. It also has applications in seismology and has been used in studies of uplift, fault lines, and other geological features.

LIDAR  can be used to produce a three dimensional computer model for dinosours using their bones that are excavated. This will provide valuable information about the animal’s resting place and perhaps some detail about how it lived or died.

Some General Survey indications are as Follows:
1. Topographic Lidar can be used in daytime or at night, however hydrographic Lidar operators would rather work by day since they need simultaneous photographic coverage
2. Clouds are not really a problem, provided the aircraft remains below the cloud ceiling, however clear sky conditions are always preferable.
3. The wind speed should be below 20 knots with a light sea state .
4. The sun elevation should not be more than 50° as sun rays may create some noise in the return waveform.
