In June of 2007, the Costa Rican government announced their intentions and put policies in place to make Costa Rica the first country in the world to be Carbon Neutral by 2021.
Costa Rica’s banana industry are doing their part and announced in that they intend to be carbon neutral as an industry by 2012 (within four years).
Costa Rica already plants more trees per person than any other country in the world and planted an incredible 7 million trees in 2008 and plans to continue planting at that rate.
More than 90% of Costa Rica's electricity production comes from hydroelectric and geothermal sources with less than 10% generated by fossil fuels. The establishment of another geothermal electricity plant will help to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and the climate damage that accompanies fossil fuel powered electriity plants.
Ormat technologies has been awarded a contract to build a second geothermal electricity plant in Costa Rica which it anticipates completing within 18 months.
James Cahill Managing Director of Costa Rica invest says “Costa Rica’s aims to become the first carbon neutral country in the world are a huge goal but without big dreams and aspirations the global problem of climate change will not be beaten. Finca Di Pacifico Dos our current investment in Costa Rica is a fully managed teak plantation with plots of land for future development. The growth of teak in plantations helps to reduce CO2 and jungle logging whilst providing a sustainable supply of teak. The development of the holiday villas on Finca Di Pacifico Dos, helps to support the economy of Costa Rica and their laudable environmental aims.”
