With less than 4 days to go till president-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration on January 20, 2009; speculation within the fashion world is fevering over which designers America’s new First Lady will be championing.

There’s no doubt that Michelle Obama will be catapulted into a media frenzy on Tuesday. Beginning with the swearing-in ceremony followed up by the nine official balls. Michelle will be greeted by hoards of photographers and interviewers wanting to know whose outfits she has chosen to wear.

Michelle has already caused a stir with the black and red floral dress by Thakoon Panchigul, which she wore to her husband’s acceptance speech. It was widely anticipated that an announcement would be made over the weekend, but in a stunning u-turn the press and designers will be informed on the inauguration day of the dresses that she will be wearing.

The u-turn can be interpreted as wanting to avoid the publicity caused by Hart Schaffner Marx after revealing the president-elect had purchased a $900 pure wool tuxedo. The decision not to reveal the name of the designers is somewhat out of convention, many of her predecessors have released sketches weeks in advance.

So the big question is, whose designs will the size 8, 45 year old, mother of two, be wearing on that historic day. Some reports suggest Michelle will opt for Chicago based Maria Pinto. Pinto created the memorable sleek and minimal, turquoise v-neck dress that Michelle wore when she addressed the Democratic convention last August.

Other commentators are guessing that she will go for Thakoon Panchigul or Jason Wu. Wu is the young designer, whose No. 17 from his Spring 2009 collection caught our attention when Michelle wore it for her interview with Barbara Walters.

Experts also see an opportunity for African-American designers to have their works projected onto the world stage. With a host star studded names such as Tracey Reese, Kai Milla and Rachel Roy vying to be nominated by the First Lady.

The next few days will certainly be very exciting for fashion critics and professionals, but one thing is for sure - with so many designers willing to offer their services, Michelle will certainly not be short of choice.
