By: Bog Dane The Canadian Caregivers Association (CCA) is well known for its mission to protect the rights of Canadian families and caregivers from all over Canada and warn them about malpractices in this business The live-in caregiver program sets a number of ground-rules for all foreign candidates that ensures candidates are educated, specialized, versed in either official language, and already able to demonstrate their employability. Standard qualifications for the program are regulated federally, though conditions of employment are determined at a provincial level. Requirements include a minimum of 6 months of training or 1 year of compatible employment within the last 3 years - though various exceptions and additional stipulations do apply. For Canadian families this provides a number of practical and obvious guarantees. Caregivers have at least the equivalent of a high school graduate degree, years of work in their field or months of focused full-time training, as well as the communication skills their employers require of them. With regards to effectiveness, the live-in caregiver program has performed extremely well. With the proper assistance, and overseas candidate can be recruited and brought to Canada in a matter of just a few weeks. Additional candidates may be available for employment immediately if they have recently completed a contract in Canada. The only shortcoming of the program is frequently found to be in the later steps, just before a candidate is able to arrive in Canada. While the program allows for reliable standards, individual Canadians may not be able to verify eligibility on their own and can lose time unexpectedly if their candidate does not meet a program particular. Once again, this is one of the reasons the live-in caregiver program is as tied to private childcare providers – who are able to provide the pre-screening families are not always able to conduct for themselves. Although government standards impose strict minimums and qualifications, these often enable families to address needs in ways they have not previously been able to. Individual one-on-one care is a luxury many Canadian families have found to be an affordable, and often essential, feature made available to them through the program. Elderly and disabled individuals are able to find caregivers that can live in their homes with them and provide the regular assistance they need without moving to separate or distant care facilities. Whatever the need, the live-in caregiver program has broadened the market significantly, and allows for a wide range of particular needs to be met at prices that have been extremely competitive over the long-term. The Canadian Caregivers Association - CCA intends to advocate on behalf of caregivers and employers with policy makers at all levels and other key stakeholders to promote action to address the needs of live-in caregivers and Canadian families.
