When FTP is used all the data and commands sent from the client to the server will be in plain text. As a result even user names and passwords are transmitted in the clear without encryption. Security conscious webmasters and organizations are moving away from FTP and embracing more secure SFTP systems where all the commands and data are transfers are encrypted.
