| London Personal Trainer Aimi Chen Rethinks Fat Loss for Chinese WomenLondon-based trainer Aimi Chen uses DEXA data, strength training and nutrition adapted to Chinese tastes to shift the focus from weight to body composition.
By: Aimi Chen Fitness Relying solely on their bathroom scales, women repeatedly attempt to lose weight on their own, sometimes unconsciously, cutting calories only to regain the weight. Over time, repeated cycles of dieting can negatively affect women's relationship with their bodies and with food. From the Scale to Body Recomposition Aimi's approach is to look beyond weight alone — focusing instead on body recomposition. With technology such as DEXA scans, her clients can get a full picture of their bodies, including fat mass, lean mass, visceral fat, and bone density. "A 22-year-old who weighs 55kg, appears to have a high body fat percentage, and does not have a flat tummy as portrayed on social media may think that she needs to lose more fat," Aimi said. "In fact, she may need to do the exact opposite: build lean muscle." Adapting recipes to suit Chinese tastes Besides rigorous strength training, which Aimi's team offers, balanced nutrition is also a determining factor in achieving successful body recomposition. Rather than asking clients to adopt Western cuisine, often referred to as "白人饭" in Chinese social media, the team prepared and adapted cuisines from around the world to suit Chinese taste buds. "This holistic approach helped one client with severe obesity, a Chinese finance professional working in the city of London, RuoYu Lan, lose 15kg, of which 10kg was fat mass, according to the DEXA scan results in one year," Aimi said cheerfully.
