PLI Subsidy for Automobile Industry Opens New Incentive Opportunities for Indian Manufacturers

NAGPUR, India - Sept. 10, 2026 - PRLog -- The PLI Subsidy for Automobile Industry is creating opportunities for eligible automobile manufacturers, auto component producers and investors focused on advanced automotive technology manufacturing in India. The Production Linked Incentive framework links financial incentives with eligible sales performance, investment, domestic value addition and compliance requirements.

PLI Scheme Supports Advanced Automotive Manufacturing
The Production Linked Incentive Scheme for the automobile and auto component industry was introduced to encourage investment in advanced automotive technology, strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities and develop a competitive automotive supply chain in India.

The scheme differs from conventional capital subsidy programmes because incentives are linked to the performance of eligible products and companies. Businesses must satisfy prescribed investment, sales, product and compliance conditions before claiming applicable incentives.

Benefits from the Automobile PLI Scheme
The PLI Subsidy for Automobile Industry covers specified categories of manufacturers and investors, subject to the conditions prescribed under the scheme.

Potentially eligible categories include:
  • Existing automobile original equipment manufacturers (OEMs)
  • Auto component manufacturers
  • Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) manufacturers
  • Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle manufacturers
  • Manufacturers of eligible Advanced Automotive Technology products
  • Qualifying new non-automotive investors entering the automobile manufacturing sector
Domestic Value Addition is a Key Requirement
Domestic Value Addition (DVA) is an important consideration under the automobile PLI framework. Eligible products are required to meet the prescribed DVA requirements, with compliance subject to the certification mechanism specified by the Ministry of Heavy Industries.

For manufacturers, DVA planning can influence sourcing decisions, production processes, component procurement and supply-chain strategy. Businesses therefore need to consider domestic manufacturing requirements at the project-planning stage rather than only when preparing an incentive claim.

Incentives Linked to Sales Performance
The automobile PLI framework provides separate incentive structures for Champion OEMs and Component Champions.

For eligible Champion OEMs, incentives are linked to the Determined Sales Value of qualifying Advanced Automotive Technology vehicles. The applicable incentive rate varies according to the prescribed sales-value slabs and scheme conditions.

The scheme is performance-oriented and includes prescribed sales thresholds and annual growth requirements.

"Businesses considering the PLI Subsidy for Automobile Industry (https://finraja.com/pli-subsidy-for-automobile-industry/) should look beyond the incentive rate and assess the complete eligibility and compliance framework, including investment, sales, DVA and product requirements," said a spokesperson for Finraja Consultancy.
