![]() India BESS Market 2026 - 92 GWh Pipeline, New Tenders and Battery Manufacturing InvestmentsUtility-scale projects, government-backed storage programmes, domestic manufacturing capacity and emerging C&I applications are reshaping India's battery storage landscape through 2032.
By: Makreo Research and Consulting India BESS Tenders Expand Across Grid-Scale and Renewable Storage Projects Recent procurement activity shows storage demand expanding beyond standalone projects. SECI issued a 1,500 MW / 6,000 MWh FDRE-IX tender, alongside a 100 MWh standalone ESS procurement in August 2026 for short-term, on-demand use. It also tendered a 70 MW solar project paired with 25 MW / 50 MWh BESS in Andhra Pradesh, highlighting storage's growing role in renewable integration and dispatchability. Government Support Strengthens India Battery Storage Investment Policy support is translating into deployable capacity. In July 2026, the Ministry of Heavy Industries opened a 10 GWh ACC manufacturing programme for grid-scale stationary storage. The Central Electricity Authority reports that government BESS VGF programmes collectively support 43.85 GWh, including 30 GWh under the PSDF-backed programme with ₹5,400 crore in financial support. Domestic Battery Manufacturing and Strategic Investment Accelerate India's supply-side ecosystem is expanding. Exide Industries invested ₹450 crore in Exide Energy Solutions in March 2026 to support its Bengaluru lithium-ion cell manufacturing project for EV and stationary storage applications. In September 2026, Premier Energies announced a joint venture with Germany's RCT Group for a 12 GWh BESS manufacturing facility in Telangana, with an initial 6 GWh phase targeting commercial, industrial and utility-scale applications. BESS Technology and Applications Diversify Across India The market is simultaneously moving towards broader technology and application adoption. JSW Energy secured a ₹443.74 crore order for 200 MW / 400 MWh BESS and PCS solutions in July 2026, supported by its 5 GWh-per-year Pune battery assembly facility. IESA has also tracked new tenders involving vanadium redox flow batteries, while residential storage gained visibility with Ola Electric's domestically manufactured Ola Shakti system. India BESS Market Outlook Through 2032 The strategic direction of the India BESS market is increasingly defined by the conversion of tendered capacity into operational assets, alongside localisation of cells, battery systems and energy management capabilities. Rising renewable penetration, peak-demand requirements and grid modernisation are strengthening the case for storage. Government projections indicate a requirement of 47.24 GW / 236 GWh of BESS by 2031-32, reinforcing the scale of the long-term deployment requirement.
