| ![]() ICT Innovations Releases ictfax-mcp, an Open Source MCP Server for AI Fax AutomationThe free, MIT-licensed tool connects AI assistants such as Claude to the ICTFax open-source fax server, letting them list and track faxes and, when the operator allows it, send a fax. Sending stays off by default.
By: ICT Innovations The Model Context Protocol is an open standard for connecting AI assistants to real systems. ictfax-mcp uses it to give an assistant four tools. Two are read only: list the fax transmissions on the server, and check the status of a single one to see whether it is processing, delivered, or failed. The other two change things and stay switched off until the operator turns them on: upload a document, and send a fax. Sending a fax is a single call. The server uploads the document, creates the recipient, builds the transmission, and sends it, while ICTFax converts the file and pushes it over T.38 underneath. The operator can then poll the status tool to watch delivery. Safety shaped the design. Because sending a fax dials a real number and can cost money, the server ships read only, and the two write tools are not loaded at all unless the operator sets a single environment variable. Reading fax status and history needs no switch and never dials anyone. The server signs in with the operator's own account and the password never leaves the machine that runs it. ictfax-mcp is one of several MCP servers ICT Innovations is opening up across its product line, including servers for its PBX, contact center, and exam systems. The company builds open source and commercial communication tools, and ICTFax is its free, open source fax server. Developers can install the server with the command npx -y ictfax-mcp and point it at their ICTFax install, including the official Docker image.
