CrowdAvoid Launches Smart Traveler, the Paid Tier Google Maps Doesn't Offer

MANHATTAN, N.Y. - Sept. 2, 2026 - PRLog -- CrowdAvoid, the free crowd-tracking travel app used to navigate 500+ attractions worldwide, today launched Smart Traveler, a premium tier that unlocks real-time crowd-drop notifications, extended weather forecasting, full cruise ship schedules, and complete access to hidden gems and day trips. Smart Traveler is available now on iOS and Android for $4.99/month or $29.99/year.

The launch comes five weeks after roughly 25,000 to 70,000 people marched through Palma de Mallorca on July 26 in one of the largest anti-overtourism protests Spain has seen, ending in clashes with police. It was the latest in a string of demonstrations across Barcelona, Venice, and Santorini as residents push back against record visitor numbers.

"Every one of those protests is about the same thing — too many people, in the same place, at the same time," said Rolf Magener, founder of CrowdAvoid. "Google Maps will tell you a place is busy right now. It won't tell you when that changes. That gap is what Smart Traveler is built to close."

Magener has traveled to more than 130 countries and walked the Camino de Santiago 19 times. He built CrowdAvoid himself after watching the crowding problem worsen year over year — most visibly during a year spent in Thailand during Covid, when the country's attractions sat empty for the first time in decades.

Smart Traveler unlocks: crowd-drop notifications, full access to hidden gems and day trips (the free tier includes one of each), 7-day and 30-day weather forecasts, cruise passenger counts and the full upcoming ship calendar, itinerary export to PDF, and the complete interactive map. Popular attractions, shopping and food listings, the Explorer Passport, Explorer Awards, and travel stats stay free for all users, no account required.

CrowdAvoid is free to download on iOS and Android, in English, Spanish, German, and French. Learn more at http://crowdavoid.com.
