| The AI Hiring Paradox: India Has Engineers, But Not Enough AI-Ready TalentBy: SilverPeople The rapid adoption of Generative AI, machine learning, automation and AI-powered products has significantly expanded demand for specialized professionals. Organizations across technology, fintech, healthcare, ecommerce and Global Capability Centres (GCCs) are competing for experienced AI engineers, data scientists, MLOps professionals, AI product leaders and GenAI specialists. The challenge is that AI readiness goes beyond knowing how to use AI tools. Companies increasingly need professionals who can work across the AI lifecycle—from understanding business problems and preparing data to developing models, deploying systems, evaluating performance and managing AI infrastructure. That combination of technical expertise, practical experience and business understanding remains relatively difficult to find. "India has an enormous engineering talent base, but the AI talent conversation needs to move beyond headcount. The real challenge is finding professionals who can translate AI knowledge into measurable business outcomes. Knowing an AI tool is very different from being able to build and execute an AI solution at scale," said Vikas Garg, Director at SilverPeople. The growing presence of GCCs is adding another layer of competition. Global enterprises are establishing sophisticated AI and product engineering teams in India, while startups are using flexible work models, equity opportunities and rapid career growth to attract specialized professionals. For businesses, simply increasing hiring volumes may not solve the problem. Organizations need to rethink job descriptions, strengthen employer branding, accelerate recruitment processes and invest in upskilling existing teams. The AI talent gap is therefore becoming more than a recruitment challenge—it is becoming a business execution challenge. Companies that build AI talent pipelines early and combine external hiring with internal capability development will be better positioned to convert AI investments into sustainable growth.
