The Mostly True Story of a Jewish Hippy from the Boston Suburbs Who Would Come to Control Western Maine

VERO BEACH, Fla. - Aug. 31, 2026 - PRLog -- 'Mostly True Story' Relives Those Crazy '60s Draft-Dodging Days

In the 1960s, many young men in America deliberated on how to avoid going to Vietnam. David Graiver (1947-2007) grew up in suburban Boston. His seemingly normal childhood unexpectedly led him to a unique lifestyle, filled with sexual and criminal adventures that ultimately took him deep into western Maine, which was where he went to hide from military service.

Dave found his new location to be a place where nearly everything was accepted. He lived every day as if it were his last. His was an existence filled with nudity, booze, love, laughs, and drugs. Not to mention a little crime.

Prior to this, Dave's father had another plan for his son to avoid the draft:

"He understood that young men attending college were not likely to be drafted first. He gave his son three options: 1) Hide in Canada until the war is over; 2) Frankie could accidently shoot him in the ass; or 3) Go to college. The trouble was that David's grades were, let's just say, far from college material, and roughly nine months ago, his SAT scores were terrible, as he decided to stay up the night before experimenting with magic mushrooms, showed up late to the test, and only had time to finish two-thirds of the questions.

"However, what David lacked in academics, he made up for in street smarts. Sitting next to him in homeroom (Last name G's), sat Sherri Goltz. If she wasn't the smartest kid in school, she was certainly in the running.

"After his SAT flop, David met with his guidance counselor, who advised him that he had the opportunity to retake the test. It was also suggested that he would need a boatload of tutoring. Immediately, David thought of Sherri, who from time to time helped him with his homework. Sherri also had another important asset going for her – her mom just happened to work in admissions at Boston University."

"This cleverly written and rollicking Mostly True Story takes a look back at a highly political time in American history, when most would do anything to avoid the draft. Here is one man's story." – Lynn Eddy, VP of Acquisitions, Strategic Book Publishing
