Low Cost Automation: Flexible robotics for a changing automotive industry

SINGAPORE - Aug. 20, 2026 - PRLog -- For automotive supplier Meleghy Automotive, changing production volumes, shorter model cycles and the transition to electromobility demand automation solutions that are flexible, economical and quick to implement. One example is the automated application of barcodes to black tubular reinforcement braces. Previously performed manually, the process was repetitive and susceptible to errors. Today, an igus drylin DLE-FG-0002 linear robot handles the task in a compact 300 x 300mm workspace. Driven by toothed belts and stepper motors, the robot positions a print head precisely and applies two white barcodes within seconds. The solution costs just €1,218, while the drylin D1 control system costs €407.

The system is also designed for low-maintenance operation. High-performance plastic plain bearings with integrated solid lubricants enable dry, low-friction and dirt-resistant movement without oil or grease.

A second application uses a Dobot Nova 5 collaborative robot, sourced via RBTX, to transfer sheet metal parts into a welding system. With a payload of 5kg, 850mm reach and ±0.05mm repeatability, the cobot takes over physically demanding routine work, improving both ergonomics and process consistency.

Meleghy Automotive is also evaluating the igus ReBeL cobot, which weighs only 8.2kg and combines six-axis flexibility with a 2kg payload and 664mm reach.
