Two Birmingham nursing homes gain prestigious accreditation for end of life care

BIRMINGHAM, U.K. - Aug. 14, 2026 - PRLog -- Two Birmingham nursing homes have gained the Gold Standards Framework Quality Hallmark Award in recognition of the excellent care they provide for residents approaching the end of life.

Anita Stone Court in Moseley and Neville Williams House in Selly Park, both operated by Birmingham charity BCOP completed an intensive 18-month program of training, assessment and service improvement.

Both homes passed their final assessments with flying colours. Neville Williams House achieved a perfect score of 77 out of 77, while Anita Stone Court achieved an excellent 70 out of 77—nine points above the pass requirement of 61—and met every mandatory standard.

The Gold Standards Framework is a practical, evidence-based UK training and improvement program for palliative and end of life care. It helps care teams recognise changing needs early, hold sensitive conversations, plan ahead and provide proactive, personalised and well-coordinated support.

Independent assessors found that the framework had become firmly embedded in everyday practice at both homes, reflecting the contribution of colleagues across nursing, care, activities, catering, housekeeping, maintenance and administration.

At Neville Williams House, 96% of residents included in the assessment were able to die in the place they had chosen, supported in familiar surroundings by staff they knew and trusted. Every resident assessed had an advance care plan recording their individual wishes and preferences.

At Anita Stone Court, 94% of residents included in the assessment were able to die in the place they had chosen. Anticipatory medication was available for every resident assessed, helping staff respond promptly to changing symptoms and maintain residents' comfort.

Helen Gore, Chief Executive of BCOP, said:

"This is a tremendous accomplishment and reflects the compassion, professionalism and commitment of our teams.

"Although the assessment results are excellent, what matters most is the difference this work makes to residents and their families. By identifying changing needs early, listening carefully and planning ahead, our teams can help residents receive care that respects their individual wishes, including where and how they would like to be cared for at the end of their lives.

"I am enormously proud of every colleague who contributed to these achievements."

Through the framework, residents are supported, wherever possible, to express what matters to them and make informed choices about their future care. Their wishes are recorded in personalised plans, reviewed as circumstances change and shared appropriately with the healthcare professionals involved.

BCOP's third nursing home, Robert Harvey House, is working towards the same standard and is progressing through its own Gold Standards Framework program.

Together, these achievements demonstrate BCOP's organisation-wide commitment to helping older people live well throughout every stage of later life and receive compassionate, dignified and personalised support at the end of life.
