SGS SafeGuardS Highlights Ecuador Proposed Updates to Food Contact Articles Regulation

BAAR, Switzerland - Aug. 14, 2026 - PRLog -- SGS, the world's leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 108.26, examining Ecuador's proposed changes to food contact glass, ceramic and glass-ceramic articles.

A revised draft proposal from Ecuador's Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade and Investment was announced by the World Trade Organization (WTO) on July 17, 2026. The proposed requirements would amend the country's technical regulation (TR) for these products.

The updated draft technical regulation RTE INEN No 010 (2R), attached to WTO document number 26-5191, includes:
- The scope of the amendments
- A Harmonized System (HS) code list
- The introduction of multiple terms and definitions
- Exempted product categories
- Migration limits for lead and cadmium for different product categories
- Criteria for product labels
- Conformity assessment procedures including certification schemes

Comments on the proposal will be accepted until September 15, 2026. If approved, the revised TR will affect stakeholders across the food contact glass, ceramic and glass-ceramic products supply chain, including manufacturers, importers, retailers and other intermediaries operating in Ecuador.
