3R Urban Solutions UK Publishes Guidance on Writing a Food Waste Policy for UK Businesses

A formal food waste policy is increasingly expected by ESG auditors, procurement teams and sustainability certification bodies; yet most UK businesses do not have one. 3R Urban Solutions UK sets out what a credible food waste policy should contain.

LONDON - Aug. 13, 2026 - PRLog -- As ESG reporting frameworks become more formalised and procurement teams begin asking suppliers for evidence of environmental management practices, a written food waste policy is moving from a nice-to-have to a standard expectation for UK businesses in hospitality, healthcare and the public sector.

Mohit, Sales Head UK & Europe at 3R Urban Solutions UK, said the absence of a formal food waste policy is one of the most common gaps he identifies when speaking with sustainability leads and operations managers. "Most businesses have informal practices around food waste; separating it, managing portion sizes, donating surplus. What they rarely have is a written policy that commits the organisation to specific targets, defines responsibilities, sets out measurement methodology and describes the treatment route," he said. "Without that document, any sustainability claim the business makes about food waste is unverifiable."

A credible food waste policy for a UK business should contain six elements. First, a scope statement — defining which sites, operations and waste streams the policy covers. Second, a commitment statement — the organisation's specific commitment, whether that is zero food waste to landfill, a percentage reduction target, or full Simpler Recycling compliance. Third, a roles and responsibilities section — naming the individual or role accountable for food waste management at each site. Fourth, a measurement methodology — describing how food waste volumes are measured, recorded and reported, and at what frequency. Fifth, a treatment route description — specifying how food waste is managed, whether through on-site composting, collection to anaerobic digestion, or another compliant method. Sixth, a review schedule — committing to annual review of the policy and its targets.

For businesses using on-site in-vessel composting, https://3rurban.co.uk/the-schnell-komposter-commercial-co... the measurement and treatment route sections of the policy are substantially simplified. The machine records throughput directly, the T23 exemption provides the regulatory framework, and the compost output provides a tangible, measurable outcome that can be reported against.
