SGS SafeGuardS Highlights New US Proposals Affecting Food Contact Materials

BAAR, Switzerland - Aug. 13, 2026 - PRLog -- SGS, the world's leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 107.26, highlighting two proposed US legislative measures that would prohibit specified chemicals in food contact materials (FCMs) and articles.

Two bills were introduced by the US House of Representatives (HR) in June and July 2026 that would amend the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA). The proposals would prohibit specified chemicals in FCMs and articles.

HR 9321, the No Toxic Chemicals in Food Packaging Act of 2026 and HR 9593, the Keep Food Containers Safe from Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Act of 2026, would impact stakeholders across the FCMs and articles supply chain, including manufacturers, retailers, importers and other intermediaries operating in the US market.

PFAS are subject to increasing regulation worldwide due to their toxic and bioaccumulative properties. In the US, restrictions have been introduced across areas including drinking water, consumer products and FCMs. This broader regulatory trend is driving increased scrutiny of PFAS use across supply chains.
