Nursery Rhymes in Black by Latorial Faison Named a 2026 Virginia Literary Awards Finalist in Poetry

RICHMOND, Va. - Aug. 9, 2026 - PRLog -- RICHMOND, Va. — Acclaimed poet, educator, and recently appointed Virginia Poet Laureate Dr. Latorial Faison has been named a 2026 Finalist in Poetry for the Virginia Literary Awards, presented by the Library of Virginia, for her celebrated poetry collection, Nursery Rhymes in Black.

Released in July 2025, Nursery Rhymes in Black has received widespread critical acclaim for its lyrical exploration of Black Southern life, faith, family, memory, and resilience. Through deeply personal and historically resonant poems, Faison honors the voices of mothers, grandmothers, and ancestors while examining race, womanhood, grief, community, and the enduring power of language.

The Virginia Literary Awards recognize the Commonwealth's outstanding authors and literary achievements, celebrating books that make significant contributions to literature and culture. Being selected as a finalist places Nursery Rhymes in Black among Virginia's most distinguished literary works published during the award year.

Finalists were chosen by a panel of independent judges from over 200 nominations. Winners in each category will receive a monetary prize of $2,500 in addition to the award and distinguished recognition. On Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026, winners will be announced during a gala at the Library of Virginia.

"This collection is rooted in the stories, sacrifices, and sacred traditions of the Black South. It was written to preserve memory, honor those who came before us, and affirm the beauty, complexity, and resilience of our communities. I share this recognition with my family, my hometown of Southampton County and Courtland, Virginia, and every reader who has found themselves reflected in these poems."

Dr. Faison serves as the newly appointed Poet Laureate of Virginia, where she intends to continue to champion poetry and the literary arts; she is also Chair of the Department of Languages and Literature and Assistant Professor of English at Virginia State University.

Nursery Rhymes in Black has earned national recognition since its publication and continues to resonate with readers for its powerful blending of autobiography, history, spirituality, and social commentary through narrative, lyrical poetry. The collection reimagines nursery rhymes through the lived experiences and lens of Black Americans, transforming personal testimony into a profound meditation on identity, justice, and hope.

In addition to this latest honor, Dr. Faison is the recipient of numerous literary awards and fellowships. Her work has appeared in journals and anthologies across the country, and she is widely recognized for her contributions to contemporary American poetry.
