ICT Innovations Releases pbx-mcp, an Open Source MCP Server for Asterisk and FreeSWITCH

MULTAN, Pakistan - Aug. 9, 2026 - PRLog -- ICT Innovations has released pbx-mcp v0.1.1, an open source Model Context Protocol server that lets AI assistants read live state from Asterisk and FreeSWITCH phone systems. It is free under the MIT license, installs with a single npx command, and runs read-only by default, so an operator can ask an assistant what is happening on the PBX without granting it the ability to change anything.

Model Context Protocol is the standard AI assistants use to reach outside systems. Until now there was no MCP server for either of the two dominant open source PBX platforms. One Asterisk-named project exists, but it belongs to a code security company that happens to share the name, and nothing existed for FreeSWITCH.

pbx-mcp covers both. It connects to Asterisk over the Asterisk Manager Interface and to FreeSWITCH over the Event Socket, then exposes what it finds as tools an assistant can call. Ask which extensions are registered, what calls are up, or why a trunk dropped, and the answer comes back from the live switch instead of a stale wiki page.

Safety shaped the rest of the design. The server starts read-only. Write tools are not simply blocked at runtime, they are never registered with the assistant unless an administrator sets PBX_MCP_ALLOW_WRITE to true, so a model cannot call something it cannot see. Allow lists limit which commands run. Shell metacharacters are rejected rather than escaped, AMI header injection is guarded against, and tool output is clamped so one broad query cannot flood the assistant's context window.

"Most teams running Asterisk or FreeSWITCH already have someone who knows the CLI cold," said Tahir Almas, founder of ICT Innovations. "This does not replace that person. It lets everyone else ask a question in plain language and get a real answer from the switch."

pbx-mcp is published on npm and listed in the official MCP Registry, so it can be added to Claude Desktop, an IDE, or any other MCP client straight from its registry entry. Source code, a user guide, and configuration examples are at https://github.com/ictinnovations/pbx-mcp.

The project comes out of ICT Innovations' work on open source telephony, which includes ICTCore, ICTContact, ICTPBX, and ICTFax. Two companion libraries, asterisk-ami-node and freeswitch-esl-node, came out of the same codebase.
