| Missing Box and Paper Can Cost Watch Owners Up to 35 % — German Dealer Publishes Guide on WhatSecond-generation watch trader Uhrenhandel Wellmann breaks down the discount by brand, model age and sales channel — and warns that the choice of buyer costs far more than the missing documents
By: uhren-wellmann.de The discount is not uniform The company's own market observations put the deduction in four bands: - Vintage watches (over 30 years old): 5 to 15 percent; the market has priced the risk in. - Classic models such as the Rolex Datejust or Omega Speedmaster: - Modern sports models such as the Submariner or Daytona: 20 to 35 percent. - Top manufactures including Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and A. Lange & Söhne: 25 to 35 percent and above. Box and papers are not equally valuable: a box without documents costs roughly 10 to 20 percent, documents without the box only 5 to 10. The warranty card carries almost the entire value. The bigger loss comes from the sales channel Pawnshops and precious-metal buyers are the most expensive mistake, because they assess material value rather than market value. "A steel Submariner has a scrap value of around 50 euros and a market price of several thousand," says Gerhard Wellmann, owner of Uhrenhandel Wellmann. "We hear the same sentence again and again — 'the pawnshop offered me 1,500 euros.' As specialist dealers we then pay three to five times that. Missing papers cost you a percentage. The wrong buyer costs you the watch." At a specialist dealer the realistic loss is 10 to 25 percent against full-set prices; at a pawnshop or gold buyer it can reach 50 to 70. Preparation pays Six steps measurably improve offers: documenting serial and reference number, collecting service receipts, recording provenance, taking sharp daylight photographs, obtaining an authenticity assessment above roughly 5,000 euros, and asking three to five established dealers. A well-documented watch often attracts an offer 10 to 20 percent above the first estimate. Manufacturers offer partial remedies: IWC issues factory archive extracts, Breitling certificates of authenticity from 100 euros. Rolex does not reissue warranty cards, but an authenticity assessment after a Rolex service is widely accepted as a substitute. The full guide, in German, is available at: https://www.uhren- End
