Modern protein packaging runs on two complementary systems. VSP (vacuum skin packaging) pulls a film tightly over the product, creating zero headspace, leak-proof seals, and a display where the food is the label. MAP (modified atmosphere packaging) flushes the tray with N₂/CO₂ gas, using high-barrier lidding to keep oxygen out and extend shelf life.

Both demand a tray that is flat, rigid, and barrier-correct. Mountain Environmental supplies both systems in one footprint — 220×168×41 mm — across three materials, so processors can switch technologies without switching tooling.

Material 1: CPET — Extreme Temperature, Natural Barrier

Black, semi-matte CPET trays perform from -40°C to 220°C, going straight from freezer to oven or microwave. CPET also provides inherent O₂/CO₂ barrier — ideal for MAP applications requiring long shelf life without secondary lamination.

Best fit: frozen ready meals, sous-vide proteins, airline catering.

Material 2: Paperboard-Laminated — Brand Surface, Functional Core

White or custom-printed paperboard trays combine full-color printability with a high-barrier lamination (EVOH or AlOx) that retains MAP gas with OTR below 2 cc/m²/day. The tray becomes the on-shelf billboard — no sleeve, no extra label SKU.

Best fit: chilled meat, charcuterie, seafood, premium retail.

Material 3: Bagasse-Laminated — Compliance Without Compromise

Our sugarcane-fiber trays pair a fiber-based body with a functional barrier lamination engineered to stay below 5% plastic content — keeping the product classifiable as fiber-based under EU SUPD and exempt from plastic taxes. The lamination is SGS ND-certified PFAS-Free (fluorine < 10ppm): the "Green Passport" for California, the EU, and other high-scrutiny markets.

Best fit: brands with hard ESG targets and retailers facing PFAS bans.

In MAP, a sealed tray is not enough — the barrier stack must hold the gas mixture for the full shelf life.
