HYDERABAD, India - Aug. 3, 2026 - PRLog -- Chennai's pet licensing rule brought real change to how the city manages pet dogs, mandatory registration, microchipping, and leash rules, backed by fines for the first time.

There were some real benefits to this change, as pets were now better tracked, vaccination records were enhanced, it was a noticeable decline in unleashed dogs on the streets.

However, it also had a real effect on pet owners, including incorrect fines as a result of the delays from the portal, and health risks faced by some pets during microchipping.

Here is what actually occurred when enforcement started.

After the deadline was over, GCC went from awareness to action. This is how enforcement was implemented:

Forty-five enforcement vehicles were distributed throughout the city, each equipped with a microchip scanner and one team of four, including a veterinarian.

Teams inspected residential areas, parks, and beaches on a daily basis and stopped pet owners on their walks to check their licenses and microchips.
