Five Misconceptions About Commercial Food Waste Composting That Are Costing UK Businesses Money

Mohit, addresses the five most common misconceptions he encounters when speaking with UK businesses about on-site food waste composting from concerns about odour, space to confusion about environment

LONDON - July 29, 2026 - PRLog -- In conversations with hospitality operators, school business managers and NHS Estates teams across the UK, Mohit, Sales Head UK & Europe at commercial food waste management company 3R Urban Solutions UK, has identified five persistent misconceptions about on-site composting that are leading businesses to delay a decision that would save them money from the first month of operation.

3R Urban Solutions UK manufactures and supplies the Schnell Komposter range of in-vessel aerobic commercial composting machines

1 On-site composting will smell
In-vessel aerobic composting takes place entirely within a sealed, temperature-controlled unit. The composting process generates no odour perceptible outside the machine during normal operation because the biological activity and any gases produced are contained and managed within the vessel. This differs fundamentally from open windrow composting or uncovered food waste storage, which are associated with odour. "The sealed in-vessel process is specifically what makes this technology viable for locations near kitchens, service yards and occupied buildings," Mohit explained.

2 We do not have enough space
In-vessel composting machines are compact. The smallest models in the range occupy a footprint comparable to a large chest freezer. Most commercial kitchen service yards, hotel loading bays and school grounds have sufficient space for the appropriate model. 3R Urban Solutions UK conducts a full site assessment before recommending any machine, specifically to confirm that installation is practical for the site in question.

3 You need a full environmental permit
For standard commercial food waste volumes, a T23 registered exemption under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 is the appropriate regulatory pathway. This is a registration, not a full permit application. It is straightforward and does not take months. 3R Urban Solutions UK guides every customer through the process as part of the standard installation service.

4 The machine will not handle all our food waste — especially meat and fish
In-vessel aerobic composting reaches internal temperatures of 60 to 70 degrees Celsius during processing. At these temperatures, all standard catering food waste — including cooked and raw meat, fish, dairy and prepared meals — is safely processed in compliance with the Animal By-Products Regulation.

5 The payback period is too long to justify the investment
For a business generating half a tonne or more of food waste per week, the elimination of food waste collection costs and landfill tax exposure typically produces full payback on the machine investment within 18 to 36 months.
