Bio-Based Activated Carbon Gains Momentum as Market Shifts Toward Renewable Feedstocks

The global activated carbon market is undergoing a fundamental shift as sustainability mandates and regulatory pressures accelerate the transition from fossil-based to renewable raw materials.

DENVER, Del. - July 24, 2026 - PRLog -- Regulatory Pressure and ESG Drive the Shift

Governments worldwide are tightening environmental regulations, from the U.S. EPA's PFAS maximum-contaminant levels to the EU's Urban Waste-Water Directive upgrades. These mandates are forcing utilities and industries to adopt high-performance filtration media, with activated carbon emerging as a critical compliance tool. At the same time, corporate net-zero commitments are pushing procurement teams to prioritize low-carbon, renewable materials over traditional coal-based alternatives.

The water treatment segment alone is projected to grow from USD 3.28 billion in 2025 to USD 7.85 billion by 2035 at a 9.10% CAGR. Municipal utilities are increasingly specifying bio-based granular activated carbon (GAC) for PFAS removal, while industrial users are adopting reactivation services that cut virgin-material use by up to 70% and lower lifecycle CO₂ emissions.

Supply Constraints Create Opportunity for Renewable Alternatives

The market's reliance on imported coconut shell and coal feedstocks is facing severe stress. Coconut shell charcoal import prices rose 20% year-over-year in the U.S. (to USD 2,502/mt) and surged in Asia-Pacific, driven by supply disruptions and explosive new demand from sodium-ion battery production. This price volatility—combined with shipping crises and export tariffs in key producing countries—is making coal and imported coconut carbons less reliable and more expensive.

In response, manufacturers are accelerating investment in domestically sourced, bio-based feedstocks. Wood-based activated carbon, derived from sustainably managed forests, offers lower energy consumption and emissions compared to coal-based production. Bamboo-based carbon, with a 3–5 year harvest cycle, provides a stable, low-carbon supply chain that reduces 3.67 tonnes of carbon emissions per ton produced.

ACC's Strategic Response: 80% Renewable Portfolio

Xiamen All Carbon Corporation (ACC) reports that renewable raw materials—wood, coconut shell, bamboo, and other plant-based sources—now account for 80% of its activated carbon product portfolio. The company is actively testing new feedstocks, including resins, to further expand sustainable offerings.

ACC's products serve diverse applications: solvent recovery, biogas desulfurization, mercury removal from LNG, hydrogen purification (PSA), water treatment, and personal protective equipment. The company holds NSF, Kosher, HALA, and BV certifications, meeting stringent international quality standards.
