New Documentary Exposes the Horrors of Foster Home Abuse

POMPTON PLAINS, N.J. - July 14, 2026 - PRLog -- Film Distributor BayView Entertainment announces the release of Just to Clear the Air, a documentary exposing one of the darkest chapters in the history of foster care: the MacLaren Hall Children's Center, in El Monte, CA.

The film, made to shine a light on decades of alleged abuse and demand accountability where silence once prevailed, is scheduled to appear on finer streaming services beginning July 28^th, 2026.

Filmmaker Gregary Gardiner, a childhood victim who was sexually abused and brutalized, brought his cameras into the Los Angeles county facility for one last look at the nightmare-inducing establishment before it was destroyed forever.

This film uncovers a hidden scandal of abuse, cover-up, and torture—powered by never-before-seen footage that amplifies the victims' stories. In the process, it demands justice while exposing the truth once and for all. Now, for the first time, actual footage from within its walls is seen, the place where children were strip-searched, drugged, and "warehoused" in a building never designed for kids.

Operating for over four decades, MacLaren was an emergency placement facility that was initially meant to temporarily house children who were removed from their homes and had nowhere else to live while they awaited long-term foster care placements. What it became was a literal "house of horrors."

Up through 1976, the facility was run by the Los Angeles County Probation Department. Run more like a prison than a home for children in need, the list of offenses by the guards and staff runs the gamut from sexual assaults, verbal taunts, overmedication, physical restraints and beatings, and mental abuse. Exacerbating matters, reports of such abuse were routinely ignored by the County.

As if the abuse the children suffered at the hands of MacLaren's staff and broken system wasn't enough, the facility itself was "prison-like," with sky-high walls, barbed wire fences, floodlights, and massive gates and doors always being guarded. The conditions were overcrowded, dirty, and inhumane.

"I made this film to document a critical and long‑ignored chapter of California's child welfare history," says Gardiner. "The stories of MacLaren Hall survivors deserve accuracy, visibility, and accountability, and this film ensures their experiences are finally recognized as part of the public record. It's an important story because transparency is the first step toward meaningful reform and long overdue justice."
