BEAUMONT, Alberta - July 9, 2026 - PRLog -- There was a time before screens, when neighbors knew one another and entire communities helped raise children. James Dalton remembers that world through the eyes of a boy growing up in rural Ontario between 1939 and 1952.

Born in Ottawa, Ontario, in 1936, Dalton brings those memories to life in his memoir, The Leaky Raft: A Village Raises a Child.

About the Book

The title reflects the heart of the story. A leaky raft is imperfect, yet it stays afloat because many hands keep it going. Dalton uses that image to show how family, neighbors, teachers, and friends shaped his childhood.

Set in rural Ontario before the digital age, the memoir follows two boys through adventure, friendship, hardship, and personal growth. Rather than idealizing the past, Dalton offers an honest portrait of resilience, belonging, and the lasting impact of ordinary people.

"The raft itself becomes a powerful symbol of childhood: fragile yet enduring, imperfect yet supported by the care of the entire village." James Dalton
