Vertical Filter Press Plate Clogging: Causes and On-Site Solutions

In mild cases it extends cycle time and reduces throughput; in severe cases it damages filter plates and forces an unplanned shutdown. Most clogging builds up gradually, showing early signs like abnormal feed pressure or declining filtrate output before it becomes a full stoppage.

Typical Symptoms Feed pressure rises abnormally while flow rate drops; filtrate output slows or stops; filter cake sticks to the plates and won't discharge cleanly; some chambers produce no filtrate at all, with uneven pressure across the press.

Main Causes Clogging usually traces back to one of five factors: feed concentration too high or the material too viscous to flow into the chamber evenly; feed rate too fast, causing localized compaction before particles distribute; filter cloth blocked by fine particles or scale, which raises back pressure as drainage slows; unfiltered coarse particles or fibrous material catching at the inlet or cloth surface; or slurry left unflushed after shutdown, which dries and hardens inside the chamber and channel.

On-Site Solutions Stop feeding and release line pressure immediately. Open the plates slowly to locate the blockage — feed channel, cloth surface, or chamber interior — then flush with a high-pressure water gun, ideally from the back of the plate forward. Replace damaged or heavily clogged cloth, clear the feed line and inlet strainer, and recheck feed concentration, flow, and pressure before restarting.

Prevention Keep solids content within the equipment's recommended range, inspect cloth condition before each run and clean it regularly, fit a strainer on the feed line to catch large particles, flush the chamber before extended shutdowns, and periodically check pump pressure and flow settings for drift.

Reducing Risk Through Equipment Design Clogging frequency depends heavily on a press's automation and system design. Presses with fully automatic cycle control, automatic cloth washing after each batch, and built-in pressure/flow alarms catch problems before they escalate into clogging. High-pressure capability (up to 1.6 MPa, with secondary pressing and air drying) also helps by keeping cake moisture below 10%, reducing discharge issues from overly wet material.

Summary Clogging is typically the combined result of feed conditions, operating habits, and equipment condition. A single incident can be cleared with on-site flushing, but frequent clogging calls for a systematic review of feed parameters and cloth condition rather than repeated symptom treatment.
