You Don't Have a Discipline Problem. You Might Have a Coordination Problem

A systems-based hypothesis argues the real barrier for many high performers isn't intelligence, motivation, or knowledge — it's that the parts of them want different things.

BUDAPEST, Hungary - July 2, 2026 - PRLog -- Here is a pattern almost everyone recognizes in someone — often themselves.

A person who can diagnose other people's problems with surgical clarity, advise companies, lead teams, and model every possible failure of a plan… and who cannot, for reasons that feel almost physical, move forward in their own life. They analyze instead of decide. They prepare instead of launch. They understand their worst habits in extraordinary detail and repeat them anyway.

The usual word for this is self-sabotage. A conceptual framework called S–I–C–T — Structure, Information, Cohesion, Transformation — proposes that the word is not just unkind but wrong. And, unusually for an idea marketed to ambitious people, it comes with instructions for how to falsify it.

The provocation

It's identity built on competence: when your sense of worth is staked on being capable, the safest move is often to avoid the test. Psychologists call the surrounding mechanics contingent self-worth, fixed-mindset fragility, and self-handicapping — creating an obstacle in advance so a bad result can be blamed on the obstacle instead of on you.

The four-part lens- Roth Complexity

S–I–C–T is offered as a diagnostic vocabulary, not a law of nature. It reads a stuck system along four dimensions.

Structure — the stable architecture: habits, incentives, routines, roles, environment, resources. A brilliant strategy fails inside a structure that rewards avoidance. Does my environment make the desired behavior easier or harder?

Information — the signals flowing through: evidence, feedback, threats, predictions. High performers process information superbly, which is exactly the risk — more data can mean more clarity or more noise. Am I learning something that could change the decision, or gathering information to delay it?

Cohesion — the proposed missing variable: alignment among goals, behavior, emotions, identity, and incentives. A person can consciously want growth while emotionally seeking safety; value independence while organizing life around approval. They are not unmotivated. Different parts are pursuing incompatible objectives. Do my incentives, identity, emotions, and stated goals point the same way?

Transformation — observable change. Reading about courage is information; making the hard call is transformation. Understanding perfectionism is information; publishing the imperfect draft is transformation. What will be observably different within seven days?
