The Ancient INDog Breed More Americans Are Discovering

HYDERABAD, India - June 29, 2026 - PRLog -- Most people in the US have never heard of the Indian Pariah Dog. But this dog has lived alongside humans for over 4,500 years. That makes it one of the oldest dog breeds in the world.

It goes by several names, including INDog, Desi Dog, or South Asian pariah dog. No breeder created it. No human shaped it. It evolved on its own, naturally, over thousands of years.

Where Did This Dog Come From?

Scientists discovered a dog skull at Mohenjo-daro, an ancient Indus Valley city dating back more than 4,500 years. Many researchers believe its features closely resemble today's Indian pariah dog.

Old rock paintings in India also show this dog. Same pointy ears, same lean body, same curled tail. The dog in those paintings looks exactly like the Pariah Dogs you see in Indian streets today.

Some researchers believe the ancestors of today's Indian Pariah dog arrived in the Indian subcontinent with some of the earliest human migrations, possibly tens of thousands of years ago.
