Did Claude start showing sponsored content? What we found in a Singapore logistics audit

One logistics prompt from a Singapore IP returned an answer that sounded authoritative. Fragmentation, SME digitisation gaps, labour constraints. Standard Claude.

Then we hovered a source chip.

The linked page is a native advertorial for OnRobot's D:PLOY cobot platform. Claude used it to ground claims about automation adoption in Singapore — while other citations on the same answer (FreightWaves, Haulio, Aspire) carried no sponsored label.

Anthropic published a formal ad-free pledge in February 2026, timed against ChatGPT's sponsored placement launch. Industry research puts Claude's web search at roughly 87% alignment with Brave's organic results. We found no other public report of Claude citation hovers explicitly labeled "Sponsored content."

So what is happening? Probably not Claude selling ads. More likely metadata passthrough: the publisher marks the article as sponsored; Claude displays it in the hover card. The practical problem is the same either way — buyers may treat AI answers as neutral research while part of the evidence is paid trade media, and most marketing teams never check.
