High Filter Cake Moisture in Vertical Filter Presses? These Causes Are Easy to Overlook

Excessive moisture increases drying costs and affects product quality in mining and chemical industries. Vertical filter presses offer high pressing capacity, yet many users still report moisture levels that fall short of expectations. Here are the most common causes and how to address them.

Mismatch Between Feed Concentration and Particle Size

Low feed solids content reduces the pressure differential across the filter cloth, resulting in a loose, high-moisture cake. A high proportion of ultrafine particles can blind the cloth micropores, restricting drainage. Check that feed solids content falls within the equipment's recommended range and assess whether pre-thickening or pre-classification is needed.

Pressing Pressure or Hold Time Insufficient

Pressing pressure is the most direct parameter affecting moisture. Running below the optimal range leaves liquid insufficiently removed. Similarly, if hold time is too short, liquid cannot fully migrate out of the cake — particularly with high-viscosity or fine-particle slurries. Incrementally raise pressure and extend hold time in small steps, measuring moisture at each interval.

Filter Cloth Condition

Blinded, damaged, or incorrectly specified filter cloth significantly impairs drainage. Inspect cloths regularly, clean when blinding is detected, and re-evaluate pore size specifications against your material's particle size distribution.

Diaphragm and Air Blow Performance

A functioning diaphragm squeeze can reduce moisture by several additional percentage points after initial filtration. Verify that inflation pressure is stable and that diaphragm seals remain intact. Air blow drying after pressing is equally important — confirm blow pressure reaches 0.4–0.7 MPa and that distribution across the cake is even.
