8 Factors Affecting Filter Press Cycle Time

MINHANG, China - June 5, 2026 - PRLog -- NHD Publishes Technical Guide on Vertical Filter Press Cycle Time Optimization

Eight-factor framework helps process engineers reduce cycle time and increase throughput without additional equipment

NHD, a manufacturer of vertical filter press equipment with over 30 years of experience in solid-liquid separation technology, has released a technical guide identifying the eight key factors that determine filter press cycle time — and how each one can be addressed to improve operational throughput.

Cycle time directly controls how much material a facility can process per shift. According to NHD's engineering team, a 10–15% reduction in cycle time often delivers meaningful throughput gains without capital investment in additional equipment.

The Eight Factors

The guide covers the following variables, in order of practical impact:
  1. Feed slurry concentration — Higher solids content shortens the fill phase, but overly thick slurry can block inlet ports and cause uneven cake thickness.
  2. Filtration pressure — NHD's HDLY series operates at up to 1.6 MPa, suited to hard-to-filter materials including MHP tailings and titanium dioxide slurry.
  3. Filter cloth selection and condition — Cloth specification and ongoing maintenance both affect resistance and cycle length. NHD engineers specify cloth at the design stage to avoid commissioning-stage losses.
  4. Cake thickness — Effective thickness is shaped by feed concentration, pump pressure, and fill time, not just chamber depth.
  5. Slurry temperature — Warmer slurry has lower viscosity and dewaters more quickly, particularly in phosphoric acid and hydrometallurgical applications.
  6. Pump performance and feed rate — Variable-speed pump control protects cloth in the fill stage while maintaining maximum pressure during filtration.
  7. Automation and control — NHD's PLC-based control system runs each cycle phase in sequence without operator input, reducing idle time and variation between cycles.
  8. Cake discharge efficiency — Incomplete discharge extends the non-productive portion of each cycle. Cloth specification and pre-coat steps can resolve sticking issues before equipment changes are considered.

About the Guide

The guide is intended for process engineers and procurement teams evaluating vertical filter press performance or selecting equipment for new installations. It recommends working through all eight factors systematically when cycle times fall short, rather than defaulting to equipment changes.

NHD has commissioned over 200 vertical filter press units worldwide, including 180 m² installations for nickel-cobalt hydrometallurgy projects in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia.
