Developing Leaders Quarterly titled
"Leading Without a Mask: Reclaiming Identity Adaptation as Leadership Integrity."The article introduces
Dynamic Identity Alignment, a leadership perspective that challenges the simplistic idea that authenticity means always showing up in the same way. In complex systems, especially those marked by transformation, pressure, uncertainty, and stakeholder tension, leaders are required to adapt constantly. The real question is not whether leaders change how they show up, but whether they do so consciously, coherently, and in alignment with their core values.
Drawing on Luigi Pirandello's powerful exploration of identity, particularly the tension between the self we believe we are and the many selves perceived by others, the article reframes leadership identity not as a fixed mask, but as a dynamic act of alignment. Pirandello's insight that we are "one, no one, and one hundred thousand" becomes a contemporary leadership lens for understanding how executives operate across multiple roles, audiences, and expectations without losing integrity.
