Former CIA Officer Shelly Mateer Launches New Ghost Story Series

KEY WEST, Fla. - May 27, 2026 - PRLog -- Former CIA officer Shelly Mateer, widely known for her adult-themed books about the Central Intelligence Agency as well as two children's picture books, and her Keys-themed children's series The Adventures of Shelly Beach, has launched a new series for the middle school/junior high age range. This time readers will go back to Shelly's own misfit experience in junior high, beginning in Thailand with a ghost story.

The new series, Spooky Shelly Tales, has begun! Book One of the series begins in Thailand, one of the places Shelly grew up, with a ghost story. The Mumachen is a ghostly figure that has haunted Pattaya for centuries. Filled with pre-teen insecurity, Shelly not only navigates her junior high/middle school misfit existence, but she discovers the strength to conquer her fears as well.

This series is described by Shelly as a mix between Scooby Doo, Dork Diaries, and Nancy Drew. This series would probably be best for middle school/junior high, but it may be fun for older kids as well as adults. If you have ever been a misfit, this book is for you.
