In Vietnam, Honor and Respect Cultural Exchange MEMORIAL DAY— It's a salute to military families everywhere. In a Memorial Day announcement tying together military history, workforce development, intergenerational collaboration, and racial reconciliation, journalist, filmmaker, and publicist Jackie Wright announced the launch of the "Love Reunited Honor Guard Program," an initiative in tribute to fallen war patriots and designed to train youth and elders in communication, public presentation, and community engagement skills through the use of film and storytelling. The four-week workforce development program, created through Wright Enterprises, will pair youth and elders together in a paid training experience focused on public speaking, public relations, sales cold-calling, research, and community relations. Participants will ultimately present the short documentary "Love Separated in Life… Love Reunited in Honor" to community organizations, veterans groups, schools, and civic audiences. The initiative launches as the award-winning documentary is being made available for free online viewing through June 5, 2026. The film in tribute to military families sacrifices, tells the story surrounding the reburial of Wright's father, U.S. Army Vietnam War Fallen Hero and Patriot, Sp5 Wyley Wright Jr., at Arlington National Cemetery after he had remained buried for more than 50 years in a segregated cemetery in his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. The documentary explores themes of military sacrifice, family devotion, race relations, reconciliation, and honor. Sp5 Wyley Wright Jr. was a helicopter crew chief, a proud member of the U.S. Army 114th Aviation Company out of Fort Knox, Kentucky, with over 300 successful missions completed, two weeks before he was to return home to his wife of eleven years Ouida F. Wright and their four children. His last mission as an "honor guard" for Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara who was touring troops in Vietnam, claimed his life and that of 20 year old PFC John Francis Shea on March 9, 1964 when their helicopter crashed in the Mekong River. The pilot and co-pilot escaped without harm. "Ouida, the love of my life" (as Sp5 stated in his last anniversary card sent in time from the warzone for their January 17, 1964 celebration) According to Wright, the collaborative workforce development program comes at a time when the nation continues to wrestle with division and questions surrounding identity, patriotism, and shared humanity. Wright produced the film alongside her siblings Joe N. Wright, a U.S. Army veteran, now deceased; Stanley Wright; and Phyllis Cameron. The project was written and directed by Wright in collaboration with co-director and editor Jack LiVolsi, CEO of Jackson Street Partners. Wright noted that the making of the documentary itself reflected the message of the story. "Providentially, without prior intention, Jack, a White man, and me, a Black woman, developed this film that speaks beyond race," Wright said. "It shows, both in the story and the creation of the film, what can happen as people respond to each other based on their humanity." Wright said she hopes the program can expand into multiple communities nationwide, including Athens, Georgia, where Wright hopes to get discussions underway about a possible screening during the yearlong 50th Anniversary celebration of the Black Theatrical Ensemble (BTE) at University of Georgia that was launched in April. Wright is a graduate of the University of Georgia where she was a member in the formative years of BTE that was founded in 1976 by UGA graduate student, Larry Calhoun, an alum of Morehouse College. Wright credits the members of BTE for helping her development as she obtained two BA degrees in drama '81 and journalism '84. The film has received international recognition, including selection to the Italy International Film Festival.
