Wright Enterprises Community Spotlight San Francisco Dallas is sharing news of an important upcoming community forum featuring national civil rights leader, ,Pastor Tony Lowden as part of the Barbara Lee Lecture Series of The Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center during a period of heightened concern over voting rights, civil rights protections, restorative justice, and the future direction of accountability within the justice system nationally and locally. The event, presented by the Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center and the Peralta Community College District and sponsors, will take place Saturday, May 30, at 7:00 p.m. at Beebe Memorial Cathedral, 3900 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland. Pastor Tony Lowden is recognized as the first and only Black pastor of a U.S. President — President Jimmy Carter and Mrs. Rosalynn Carter — through Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia. He is also nationally respected for his work in restorative justice, criminal justice reform, and reentry programs supporting formerly incarcerated individuals. The Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center organizers say, "Many people will appreciate receiving this opportunity to hear Pastor Lowden and Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee offering answers to Dr. King's question, 'Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?'" The gathering comes as many civil rights advocates continue voicing concerns over recent legal and political developments involving voting rights and equal justice protections. Debate continues nationally surrounding efforts critics say weaken portions of the Voting Rights Act, including positions supported by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. The evening is expected to draw faith leaders, justice advocates, educators, labor representatives, students, and community members seeking dialogue on democracy, restorative justice, and the future of civil rights in America.
