UJ African Insights Shaped Lolo Vandal's Creative Ethics & CollaborationFrom Qualification to Practice: How the University of Johannesburg (UJ) African Insights Course Reshaped Lolo Vandal's Creative Ethics, Collaborative
By: African Elephant Prod The course reframed how Lolo imagines Africa's musical possibilities: Historical and political frameworks—colonialism, resistance, and cultural renaissance— Language study opened new compositional tools. Encouraged to appreciate linguistic diversity, Lolo is experimenting with code-switching, vernacular phrasing, and the musical qualities of different tongues; these experiments currently live in sketchbooks and rehearsal rooms rather than on public releases. Engagement with voices from underrepresented communities reshaped his approach to collaboration. He is building relationships with women, sexual minorities, refugees, and migrants, prioritizing trust and shared creative ownership over quick visibility. Practically, Lolo now begins projects with reading lists and conversations, treats rehearsals as forums for feedback, and tests ideas against ethical questions such as "Whose story is this?" and "Who benefits?" These practices are already shaping his preparation; Completing African Insights did not instantly transform Lolo's discography, but it transformed his intentions and toolkit. He stands informed, reflective, and ready to create work that is thoughtful, rooted, and committed to imagining dignified futures for the stories he tells. https://www.linkedin.com/ End
