CCPSA Update from Health Canada on Free-standing Clothing Storage Units

SGS reports on Health Canada's updated performance criteria for free-standing clothing storage units under the CCPSA.

BAAR, Switzerland - May 1, 2026 - PRLog -- SGS, the world's leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 058.26, focusing on Health Canada's update of performance criteria for free-standing clothing storage units (CSUs) in Table 3 of Health Canada's 'Approach to the General Prohibitions under the Canada Consumer Products Safety Act' (CCPSA).

The update, published on March 31, 2026, follows Health Canada's assessment that CSUs not meeting the applicable criteria in ASTM F2057-23 are considered likely to pose a danger to human health or safety. This effectively prohibits the sale of free-standing CSUs that do not meet the requirements of ASTM F2057-23 or an equivalent standard and impacts manufacturers, importers, advertisers and retailers operating on the Canadian market.

The product scope of the update includes chests, drawer chests, dressers, bureaus, door chests and armoires that are not built into a wall or permanently attached to a structure, within specific height, weight and enclosed storage volume specifications.

Existing CCPSA general prohibitions are already in force, so there will be no legislated coming-into-force or transition period. As a result, Health Canada may take compliance or enforcement action at any time where it has reason to believe a product poses a danger or is non-CCPSA compliant. This includes products newly added to or recently updated in Table 3.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 058.26 for more details.
