![]() New Graphic Novel Playing With Knives Captures the Chaos of the 1980s Underground Rave SceneArtist and filmmaker Edwin Burdis reimagines his own life as a serial killer in a graphic novel set against the UK rave scene of the late '80s and early '90s
Set in and around Britain's underground rave scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s, Playing With Knives follows Mark Nutt, a man whose violent compulsions evolve from childhood into an escalating pattern of murder. Framed as the recorded testimony of a 106-year-old serial killer in the year 2080, the graphic novel moves through illegal warehouse parties, pirate radio, motorway hitchhiking, drugs, and music, capturing the fleeting freedom and chaos of a pre-digital subculture. In this fictionalized autobiography, Burdis reimagines his own life as that of a serial killer, blending crime, memory, and subcultural history into a psychologically charged portrait of obsession, identity, and self-destruction. Burdis is an internationally exhibited artist and filmmaker whose work has appeared at institutions including Tate Modern and the Hayward Gallery in London. He has directed video and music films for artists including Arctic Monkeys, Hot Chip, The Coral, and Blossoms, and was Domino Records' first artist-in-residence. Playing With Knives will be released in hardcover through Black Panel Press and distributed to bookstores and comic shops internationally.
