A 10-Year Strategic Plan for Economic Growth in Bihar 2026–2036By: Author Prashant Gunjan Agriculture continues to be the backbone of Bihar's economy, employing a significant portion of the population. However, the future lies in moving beyond traditional farming toward high-value agriculture and agro-processing. By promoting crops such as fruits, vegetables, makhana, and litchi, along with better irrigation and modern farming techniques, farmer incomes can rise substantially. The development of food processing industries will further add value and create rural employment opportunities. Industrial growth is another key pillar for Bihar's transformation. Currently underdeveloped, the industrial sector offers immense potential for expansion. Establishing industrial corridors in regions such as Patna, Gaya, and Muzaffarpur can attract investments in textiles, food processing, and small manufacturing industries. Simplified regulations, tax incentives, and improved ease of doing business will be crucial in encouraging both domestic and international investors. Infrastructure development will serve as the foundation for economic progress. Continued investment in roads, railways, and logistics networks will enhance connectivity and reduce transportation costs. The development of smart urban centers and improved rural connectivity will ensure balanced growth across the state, making Bihar more attractive for businesses and industries. Equally important is the development of human capital. Bihar's young population is a major strength, but there is a need to bridge the gap between education and employability. Expanding skill development programs in areas such as digital technology, artificial intelligence, and vocational training will prepare the workforce for emerging industries. This will not only reduce unemployment but also prevent large-scale migration. The service and digital economy can play a transformative role in Bihar's growth story. By promoting startups, building IT parks, and expanding internet access, the state can create new opportunities for entrepreneurship and innovation. A strong digital ecosystem will also improve governance and service delivery. Tourism remains an underutilized sector with high potential. In conclusion, the next ten years present a historic opportunity for Bihar. With the right mix of policy reforms, infrastructure development, industrial expansion, and human capital investment, the state can redefine its economic future. Bihar has the potential not just to grow, but to lead as a powerful engine of economic progress in India by 2036.
