The Illusion of Development in Travel Baseball

NEW YORK - April 23, 2026 - PRLog -- I've spent most of my life in baseball — playing it, coaching it, leaning on it when life didn't make much sense. And the longer I stay in the game, the more I feel a quiet obligation to say something that might make people uncomfortable:
Most travel baseball programs are not built for player development.
That's not an accusation. It's an observation — one I include myself in.
Because if I'm being honest, I don't control what matters most in a player's development anyway.
I don't control a kid's attitude.
I don't control his self-talk.
I don't control whether he chooses discomfort or avoids it.
All I can do is create an environment that invites the right choices — and hope he accepts the invitation.
The System Isn't Broken — It's Working as Designed
On weekends across New York City, you'll see the same routine: teams bouncing from game to game, a few rushed reps before first pitch, maybe a quick speech about "competing," and then it's lineup cards and substitutions.
