Nellie launches first-of-a-kind biogenic point source carbon capture pilot in the UK at WEPA Bridge

BRIDGEND, Wales - April 22, 2026 - PRLog -- Nellie Technologies has today announced the commissioning of its first industrial point source carbon capture installation at WEPA's paper mill in Bridgend, South Wales. The pilot system, deployed on Earth Day 2026, represents a significant milestone in the development of scalable, biogenic carbon capture solutions for UK industry.

The installation utilises Nellie's proprietary PhycoTank™ technology, adapted for use in an industrial setting, to capture carbon dioxide emissions directly from site processes. The captured carbon is transported a short distance to Nellie's nearby facility, where it is converted into stable biochar, enabling long-term carbon storage.

The pilot will operate for an initial period of six months and has been designed to demonstrate the feasibility of integrating biogenic carbon capture into existing industrial infrastructure. At scale, the system has the potential to contribute meaningfully to emissions reduction efforts across hard-to-abate sectors.

This deployment represents a first-of-its-kind biogenic point source carbon capture pilot in the UK at this scale, marking an important step in bridging the gap between laboratory validation and real-world industrial application..

The project has been supported by Innovate UK funding and reflects the strength of collaboration within the South Wales industrial ecosystem. Nellie Technologies worked closely with regional partners, including Eoin Bailey (Seven Steel) and Andrew Price (CR Plus), whose support was instrumental in enabling the deployment.

South Wales remains one of the UK's most significant industrial regions, with deep-rooted expertise across manufacturing and heavy industry. This project demonstrates the continued relevance of that industrial base, and the opportunity to apply existing skills and infrastructure to emerging decarbonisation technologies.
