TISS Electrical Explains Common ITEE Testing Questions From Schools and Offices

ESSEX, U.K. - April 16, 2026 - PRLog -- Test and Inspect Safety Services Ltd, trading as TISS Electrical, has published guidance addressing common questions about ITEE testing (Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment) for schools and office environments across Cambridgeshire, Essex and Suffolk.

The guidance clarifies testing frequency, legal requirements and practical scheduling issues that facilities managers, business managers and premises teams frequently ask about.

"We get the same questions repeatedly from schools about term time versus holiday testing, and from offices about whether testing can happen during working hours," said a spokesperson for TISS Electrical. "Many people also don't realise they're responsible for testing equipment employees bring from home, or that extension leads are among the most common failure items we find."

Common misunderstandings the guidance addresses include the difference between ITEE testing (for portable equipment) and fixed wire testing (for building electrical installations), legal responsibilities in rented office spaces, testing requirements for home workers, and what happens to equipment that fails testing.

The terminology itself causes confusion. ITEE (Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment) is the current official term, though most people still call it PAT testing. The name changed to reflect that all electrical equipment needs checking, not just portable appliances.

Schools face particular challenges around scheduling. Testing during term time means working around lessons and occupied classrooms. Holiday testing provides unrestricted access but needs booking well in advance. Both approaches work depending on school size and equipment volumes.

Office environments have different concerns. Desk equipment, server rooms, kitchen areas and cleaning equipment all need testing. Extension leads fail frequently because furniture gets pushed against them and people stand on them, cracking the sockets.

TISS Electrical has been providing electrical testing services across Cambridgeshire, Essex and Suffolk for many years, working with primary schools, secondary schools, academies, offices, business parks and serviced office spaces.

The company works to the latest 18th Edition standards and provides testing that meets requirements under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.

All engineers carry enhanced DBS checks for working in educational settings. Testing includes visual inspection, electrical testing, barcoded labelling and detailed reports with photographic evidence of any failed items.
